The Problem of the Poor?

Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, this volunteer heritage project explored the lives of people in need in Victorian Nottingham, recorded through their encounters with the Nottingham Society for Organising Charity.

The project ran from April to October 2015 and throughout the process we asked:

Were the Victorian poor victims of circumstance, caught in a vicious cycle of suffering and dependency?

Or were their's stories of initiative, self-sacrifice and endeavour that deserve to be heard?

And why was the Nottingham Society for Organising Charity – now Nottingham CVS – so determined to offer not a hand out, but a hand up?  How did this transition from charity to opportunity, empowering individuals to lift themselves out of poverty, really work?
